It’s hard to believe, but Eric and I have been together for twelve years now! It was during the 2005 Christmas season that we first started talking. I was a barista at Starbucks, and he was one of our regular customers. Every morning about 6:10 am, soon after we opened, he would drive up in his little red Honda Civic and park right outside the door. He always ordered a Venti peppermint cappuccino, and I’d try to have it ready for him before he even got to the cash register!
Sometimes, there would be a long line by the time he arrived, and I liked that because then I could see his face for a longer time. I always thought he was the cutest boy I’d ever seen, and when it was cold he’d have a knit cap pulled down low over his ears, and cuffed right over his gorgeous green eyes… and that red beard… mmmmm, I was so attracted to him! I never thought he would be attracted to me as well. Something about Eric made me feel very shy.
The only hint he ever gave that he liked me as well was when I got a pretty drastic haircut and he complimented it the next time he saw me. That was how I knew I might have a chance, and I finally worked up the nerve to slip him my phone number one morning soon after. The day I was planning to do it, a friend of mine from work called me and told me that she needed to switch shifts with someone, and I was the last person on the morning shift she had tried. Could she please take my opening shift in return for her shift that afternoon?
I told her straight up that I didn’t want to switch because I was going to give Eric my number that morning! Everyone I worked with knew I had little crush on him, so I assumed she would understand. I made a deal with her that if she would ask him if he had a girlfriend for me, I would give her the shift.
I came in to work that Thursday afternoon and she greeted me with a big smile. “He said he is very single,” she told me in a singsong little voice, followed by a mischievous little wink. It wasn’t much later that Eric walked in. I saw him at the end of the line and nearly dropped dead! The thing is, my man is a man of routine if there ever was one, but a 2pm cup of coffee was decidedly not his routine. If he had come in at this time in the afternoon, he must be wanting something besides a cup of coffee!
Sure enough, he approached me, and I don’t remember exactly what was said, but before it was over, I had his phone number and he had mine. My friend had apparently told him that I was crushing on him hard, and he’d decided to take action. I’ve never been so glad at another person’s indiscretion!
We chatted for a week or two, on the phone and via text message, and he would come to the store some afternoons and we’d sit on the patio until the sun went down and it started getting cold outside. I was apartment-sitting for a friend who had travelled to visit her family for the holidays during this time. I remember returning to her place in the evening and then sitting on her balcony, talking to him on the phone into the night. I don’t even know what we talked about all those hours!
My parents loved Eric the moment they met him. As a matter of fact, my mom hinted that evening that she thought I would marry him! It wasn’t long before we began to talk about forever. As a matter of fact, we were engaged by Valentine’s Day! I think my mom’s words exactly were, “When you know, you know.” Well, we knew!
Eric may have put a ring on my finger quickly, but we didn’t rush to get married. We were engaged for a year and three months before our wedding day on May 5, 2007. It was a simple garden ceremony with about thirty guests. It was the sweetest, most beautiful day! And we’ve made such a beautiful life together.
Marriage certainly isn’t always easy, but I don’t regret my swift romance with Eric or any of the twelve years we’ve spent together. I believe God has planned him to be my partner from the beginning of time, and He has made our imperfect love sacred and something worth truly fighting for. This time of year always reminds me how far we have come together!
I love to hear stories about how my friends have met their mates and fallen in love! Are you married? How did you meet your husband? Leave me a note about your love story below, I can’t wait to hear about it!
